When to send Save the Dates - Everything you Need to Know

Congrats! You’re engaged, you have a date and it’s time to let all of your family and friends know! You may be wondering do I REALLY need to send save the dates? We say yes yes yes! If not for the fun of sending your first wedding communication you also need to consider how many guests need to travel, if it is over a holiday weekend, or you may simply want to notify guests as a courtesy.

There are tons of questions when it comes to save the dates, one being when the heck do I need to put them in the mail!? Unlike your invitations that have a very set time of when you send them, save the dates have a lot more freedom that depends on a lot of factors such as how long your engagement is and where exactly your wedding will be. To make it easy we have put together a chart that will show you when exactly to order them based on your selections and when exactly to pop them in the mail!

hometown wedding

Having a hometown wedding where not many people need to travel? You definitely still want to notify your guests of the date so they can plan ahead and not make any other commitments but you can get away with sending them a little later than if people needed to plan to travel.

Partial Travel

If you’re like me you and your fiancé grew up in different states! Because of this half of your friends and family need to travel and the other half do not! You will want to make sure to send your save the dates a bit earlier than if nobody needed to travel. It is always a good idea to give your guests the courtesy of knowing they may need to save up to make the trip and of course not make other plans!

destination

Having a destination wedding? How fun! In this scenario you will want to send your save the dates pretty early as everyone attending will need to book hotels/airfare and transport. They will also likely need to take off work and save up for the big trip! It is best to allow guests time to make all arrangements needed so earlier is definitely better when it comes to destination weddings!

Things to consider

Please note the timelines given are based on our collection suites only. Lead times will always be on the longer side when ordering embellishments & assembly packages. We have created these recommendations based on our average turnaround time. Turnaround times can take longer if communication lags between proof revisions and production approval so earlier is always best!
